The Loop Project: How a high-speed rail line will create a megacity of the future in Northern Britain

President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Chris Williamson has presented an ambitious concept called “The Loop” — an innovative elevated high-speed railway. Inspired by the futuristic city of Neom’s “The Line,” this project aims to radically transform the infrastructural landscape of Northern Britain and Ireland.
Uniting nine cities into a single megacity
The primary goal of The Loop is to create a powerful northern megacity with a population of over 10 million people. The high-speed line is intended to connect key centers:
- England: Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool;
- Scotland: Edinburgh, Glasgow;
- Wales: Bangor;
- Ireland and Northern Ireland: Dublin and Belfast.
According to Williamson, co-founder of the WW+P studio, such integration will allow northern cities to collaborate effectively rather than compete for investment, forming an economic zone comparable to the world’s largest metropolises.

Neom Inspiration and Technical Parameters
The project is estimated at £130 billion. In developing the concept, Williamson drew on his experience working on stations for the Saudi megaproject Neom The Line.
Key characteristics of The Loop:
- Travel Speed: up to 480 km/h.
- Travel Time: a trip between any two cities in the network will take no more than 90 minutes.
- Mobility: the possibility of living in Newcastle and working in Glasgow becomes a reality, as the journey between them will take less time than crossing Los Angeles by car.
Engineering Innovations and Architectural Identity
The concept, developed in collaboration with the engineering studio Elliott Wood, involves the construction of high-speed tracks on unique stone viaducts.
Instead of standard concrete structures, the use of prestressed stone beams is proposed. This will create a “vernacular style” that harmoniously blends into the historical and natural landscape of the British Isles.
Crossing the Irish Sea presents a particular challenge. The project envisions the construction of innovative bridges or the laying of subsea tunnels to ensure continuous communication between Great Britain and Ireland.

Manifesto of the Future
The Loop is not merely a transport project, but an architectural manifesto designed to provoke discussion about the future of British infrastructure. If implemented, the line would become the third and most technologically advanced high-speed link in the country, setting new standards for global transport engineering.
